Tysabri® (natalizumab) is a monoclonal antibody approved for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (RMS) in adults. It belongs to a class of therapies known as selective adhesion molecule inhibitors and is designed to block immune cells from crossing into the brain and spinal cord, where they can cause inflammation and damage.
Tysabri® offers a highly effective treatment option for patients with MS, helping to significantly reduce relapse rates, slow disease progression, and limit the development of new brain lesions.
In multiple sclerosis (MS), the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath — the protective covering around nerves that supports proper communication within the brain and body.
One way harmful immune cells reach the central nervous system is by crossing the blood-brain barrier — a protective layer that normally keeps the brain and spinal cord safe.
Tysabri® works by blocking certain molecules (specifically, alpha-4 integrins) that immune cells use to pass through the blood-brain barrier. By preventing these immune cells from entering the central nervous system, Tysabri reduces inflammation, protects the myelin sheath, and helps maintain nerve function.
While Tysabri is not a cure for MS, it helps stabilize disease activity, reduce relapses, and protect against further neurological damage.
Tysabri® cost can vary depending on several factors including insurance status and insurance provider. Our team at Advanced Neurology of Colorado are committed to lowering costs and improving access for our patients.
We work with virtually all leading commercial insurance providers in Northern Colorado as well as Medicaid and Medicare.
