IVIG stands for intravenous immunoglobulin. It is not one brand of medicine. It is a type of treatment sold under several different brand names, such as Gamunex-C®, Privigen®, Panzyga®, Octagam®, and Gammagard Liquid®.
Each brand is a little different. They treat different conditions, run at different speeds, and carry their own warnings. Your provider will work with your insurance plan to determine which brand is covered.
In neurology, IVIG is used most often for a nerve condition called CIDP. It is also used for multifocal motor neuropathy, dermatomyositis, and sometimes for myasthenia gravis.
Here is what treatment usually looks like:
Your nurse will start your treatment slowly and speed it up as you get comfortable. If you get a headache, the nurse can slow it back down. Drinking plenty of water in the days before your visit helps a lot.
Antibodies are proteins your immune system makes to fight off germs. IVIG is made from antibodies donated by thousands of healthy people.
In some nerve conditions, your body makes antibodies that attack your own nerves by mistake. This causes weakness, numbness, and tingling.
Donated antibodies help in more than one way at the same time. Doctors do not think there is one single switch that IVIG flips.
Here is what it does:
How fast IVIG works depends on your condition. In CIDP, many people notice their strength improving over several weeks.
Your doctor may change how often you get treatment based on how long the benefit lasts for you. If you start feeling weaker before your next visit, tell your care team — that information helps them adjust your schedule.
