Rituxan® (rituximab) is given through an IV. It lowers the number of B cells in your body. B cells are immune cells that can cause harm in certain diseases.
Rituxan is approved to treat several blood cancers and immune conditions: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis, two blood vessel conditions called GPA and MPA, and a skin condition called pemphigus vulgaris.
Rituxan is not FDA-approved for MS, NMOSD, or myasthenia gravis. Doctors do sometimes use it for these conditions based on research and experience. That is called off-label use, and it is legal and common. Your neurologist can explain why they are recommending it for you.
Your dose and schedule depend on which condition you have. Your doctor will set these.
Your first treatment is the longest one. Your nurse starts slowly and speeds up as you do well. You will get medicine beforehand to lower the chance of a reaction, and you will be tested for hepatitis B before you start.
B cells are a kind of immune cell. They make antibodies, which are proteins that normally fight off germs. B cells also help direct the rest of your immune system.
In some diseases, B cells cause problems instead of helping. They make antibodies that attack your own body, or they push other immune cells to cause swelling and damage.
B cells carry a marker on their surface called CD20. That marker is how Rituxan finds them.
Here is what it does:
B cells disappear from your blood within a few days. But feeling better usually takes weeks to months, because the antibodies already in your system have to clear out first.
How long the benefit lasts is different for everyone. Your doctor will decide when you need your next round based on how you are doing and on blood tests.
