Uplizna® (inebilizumab-cdon) is given through an IV. It treats three conditions in adults: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) in people who are AQP4 antibody positive, generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) in people who are AChR or MuSK antibody positive, and a condition called IgG4-related disease.
Uplizna lowers the number of B cells in your body. B cells are immune cells. In these three conditions, they make antibodies that attack your own tissue.
After you get started, Uplizna is only twice a year:
Before you start, you will be tested for hepatitis B and for tuberculosis. If either test is positive and untreated, you cannot take Uplizna. These are hard rules, not cautions. A nurse will also stay with you during your treatment and watch you afterward.
This section explains NMOSD, which is the most common reason people take Uplizna. Ask your neurologist how it applies to your condition.
In NMOSD, your immune system makes antibodies that attack a protein called aquaporin-4. That protein sits on cells that support the nerves in your brain and spinal cord.
When those antibodies attack, they cause swelling that damages your optic nerves and your spinal cord. This is what causes vision loss, weakness, and numbness during an attack.
Here is the part that matters most: damage from each attack can be permanent. That is why stopping attacks before they start is the whole goal of treatment.
Here is what it does:
Uplizna is preventive treatment. Its job is to stop attacks before they happen.
This is important to understand: success looks like an attack you never had. You may not feel different from day to day, and that is not a sign the treatment is failing. It is what working looks like.
Uplizna also cannot undo damage from attacks you had before you started. Your neurologist will watch for new symptoms and track how you are doing over time.
